Making My Clothes Work for Me

It's taken a while, lots of shopping, and lots of experimenting, to find clothes that really work for me.  Some of you may be a perfect 10, that is, size 10, and tall enough to walk into a store and come out with something that fits just right.  But not me!  At barely 5 foot 0, with a few soft edges, sleeves will be too long, the waist will hit in the wrong place, and the neckline will be to low or too wide.  Most of my purchases need alterations, even if they are petite sizes, and sometimes it gets discouraging.  I've learned through trial and error what works best to create the most pleasing silhouette. I have to make the most of this one body I have!

I'm so inspired by blogger Susan after 60, who is so careful in what she buys, and sets high standards for herself.  I decided to set a few rules and standards for what works for me.  I hope this short post will help you come up with what works for you!

I need to wear v-neck tops and dresses in order to flatter the large bust that sits on my short frame.  A boatneck top or dress widens my shoulders and my bra plays peek-a-boo, no matter how many times I adjust it.  See the difference in the two little black dresses below.  The first one has been worn to several special occasions, but the billowy sleeves always irritate me, and so I'm letting this one go.  My new LBD will be this classic v-neck shift with princess seams that hits just above the knee.

Shirts look best when they are big enough to skim the body, yet fitted, with princess seams, for example.  My favorite shirt is the "perfect shirt" from Talbot's, which is no-iron and very crisp, and comes in a petite size that really is just the right length for me.  A button shirt left open at the top creates a nice flattering v-neck, where I can show off my favorite necklaces.  Other silhouette-pleasing tricks are an empire waist/seam under the bust and a peplum waist, but these can be difficult to find.

My purse needs to be just big enough for all my essentials (and there are many essentials these days with the necessary masks and sanitizers we need to carry) but not too big to overwhelm me.  I like an outside pocket for keys, an inside pouch for a cell phone, and zippers that work.  I love having the option of using either a cross body strap or short handles.  I prefer a cognac or soft khaki/off white color for everyday use, but will occasionally carry a floral bag, for example, from Vera Bradley.

Working with my standards is making shopping so much easier.  I forgive myself for the shopping mistakes that led me to this moment!

What are your standards?

We all have to get dressed every day anyway, so we may as well have some fun!
