You've read a hundred of those articles on how to organize your closet, haven't you? And they all start the same way, with taking everything out of your closet, looking at it, trying it on, deciding if you will keep it, donate it, discard it, or maybe hide it for a season....It's exhausting! Every time I try this, I end up giving up after going through several pairs of pants, and realizing, yeah, I'll probably wear this again...why not keep it? I've bought new hangers, read the Marie Kondo book, had my closet (and paper files) done over by a professional organizer...still, I can't seem to find that sweet spot of wardrobe organization.
Here's a new take on getting organized. What is your goal? Perhaps you want to reduce your grand collection of shoes, blouses and dresses. Or perhaps you just want to get to know yourself and your style a bit better.
Try tracking what you wear. Right now, print this page, or copy the chart below, and write down everything you're wearing, as indicated. For example, bootcut blue jeans, Southwest pattern tee, silver drop earrings, tan booties, navy cardigan, pink backpack. Then, write down what you felt you were missing or looking for while you were getting dressed, for example, did you need a brown belt, but didn't have one? Finally, write down if you really dislike something you have on, perhaps because it's too tight, pulls at the bust, or has a stain, or perhaps, "Why did I grab this ugly pink backpack instead of my cute brown leather purse?"...that would go under the category of "I'm never wearing this again!"
At the end of two weeks, we will look at these charts, and analyze them.
